Initial Assessment

Initial Assessment

A thoughtful starting point for your mental health journey

Whether you’ve been struggling for a few weeks or many years, the first step is the same: a careful, unhurried conversation with a clinician who takes the time to listen. Our Initial Assessment is that conversation — a structured, confidential session designed to understand what you’re going through, why it might be happening, and what kind of help is likely to work best for you.

People come to an initial assessment for many different reasons. Some are responding to a specific crisis or change in life. Others have been quietly carrying something for years and are ready to talk about it. Some have already tried therapy or medication and want a second opinion. There is no “right” reason to come in, and no clinical question is too small.

What happens during the appointment

An Initial Assessment is longer than a routine follow-up — typically 30-60 minutes. This gives us time to do three things properly:

  • Hear your story in your own words. We start where you want to start. Many people find this part itself helpful, simply because the questions you’re asked at a thorough psychiatric assessment are different from the ones friends, family, or general practitioners typically ask.
  • Build a complete clinical picture. We’ll explore current symptoms, your medical and psychiatric history, family history, sleep, appetite, substance use, work and relationship context, and any past treatment. None of this is judgement — it’s the information needed to think clearly about what might be helpful.
  • Discuss what comes next. By the end of the session you’ll have a working understanding of what we think is going on, what the realistic options are (psychotherapy, medication, both, lifestyle changes, further assessment), and a recommended plan tailored to your situation.

Who an initial assessment is for

An initial assessment is the right starting point if you’re experiencing any of the following and unsure where to turn:

  • Persistent low mood, hopelessness, or loss of interest in things you used to enjoy
  • Anxiety, panic attacks, persistent worry, or difficulty sleeping
  • Relationship difficulties, parenting struggles, or family conflict
  • Grief, loss, or major life transitions you’re finding hard to navigate
  • Memory or attention concerns in yourself or a family member
  • Concerns about a child or adolescent’s emotional or behavioural changes
  • A wish for a second opinion on an existing diagnosis or treatment
